So how can people who have an irrigation system help conserve water? The best place to start is to have your irrigation system audited. A certified irrigation contractor can perform the audit and they will carefully examine and test your irrigation system. They will then create an estimate or “report” for you detailing any problems with the system and including suggestions on how to improve that system. Many contractors will also suggest a watering schedule showing how often and how long you should water during each month of the year. (See the Recommended Audit Guidelines produced by the Irrigation Association.) After you have had your system audited, you can go from there to begin making the necessary changes to your irrigation system. It is very wise to use a contractor who is associated with the Irrigation Association. We are getting call after call from customers wanting quotes on new irrigation systems. One option for our customers to take advantage of is the fact that we can install a partial system (such as just front yard or just back yard) that is set up to be added to later on. This gives customers the option of being able to plan to irrigate first what needs it the most but it also gives them the option of splitting the financial part up. Let’s face it, though irrigation systems will definitely save you money over time, it can be a big investment up front. For many people, including myself, it is easier to split the cost and have the other part of the irrigation I want installed when I have been able to financially prepare for it.
