As irrigation efficiency has evolved, you may have been hearing the term “evapotranspiration,” commonly referred to in the irrigation industry at “ET.” ET systems use specific evapotranspiration date to determine watering needs, thereby allowing for more efficient watering.

Most of us have a good idea with evaporation is. But do you know what transpiration is? Transpiration is the process by which moisture is carried through plants from roots to small pores on the underside of leaves, where it changes to vapor and is released to the atmosphere. Transpiration is essentially evaporation of water from plant leaves.

You must account for evaporation and transpiration when wanting to water in the most efficient amount possible.
