^That is one of the most frequently asked questions we get. The answer is not simple….

Because water expands when it freezes, it obviously is the first line of protection to have your irrigation system ‘blown out’ to protect it from freezing temperatures.

Are there other things you can do as a homeowner?

We have homeowners who, once their irrigation system is winterized, actually wrap their valves and backflow devices in plastic, then a towel and secure it to prevent freezing of water from the outside. It’s interesting when I hear this but I certainly can tell you that this doesn’t hurt as unorthodox as it sounds to irrigation professionals.

Typically this is recommended as a short term prevention method in protecting your backflow device if a hard freeze is expected before winterization.
