Brrrr! Jack Frost is serving up some last minute winter weather for us! If you haven’t winterized your irrigation system this season, don’t panic just yet. You can still call a professional to handle that for you or you can follow a few simple steps that may save you from headaches later on:

There are a few things you can do yourself to help preserve your system during freezing weather. The first thing you will need to do is shut the water off at the main valve for your irrigation system. Next, you can run each zone of your system for a short period of time which should remove most of the water from the system’s pipes. Some DIY’ers recommend using a shop vac to suck water from the valves and they also suggest checking heads for water and removing and shaking them out. The extent to which you want to get involved is up to you. We don’t have a lot of consistently cold weather here and pipes are usually buried deep enough to avoid becoming frozen. So in the event that you haven’t winterized, your system should be fine. Turning off the water supply to your irrigation system and running the system for a few minutes per zone however, could potentially save you from some major repairs come spring time.
